Search and find word puzzles are lots of fun for all ages! In addition to great entertainment, this puzzler also provides good practice in reading and spelling all sorts of words. In this case, you'll be practicing those with vicious vowel spellings!

1. Ask students to write sets of sentences for the words on the printable page that are noted as homophones. Their sentence sets should be similar to the hangar/hanger example set, showing each word's distinct meaning.
2. Assign students to work in pairs to create their own word search puzzles using words from one of my grade level word lists. Students may select words of their choice, or words with suffixes, double letters, or any other feature.
Give each team a piece of graph paper on which to work. When word puzzles are finished, the teacher should check them over, make clean copies and share them amongst other students.
3. Encourage students to write sentences using at least two words from the same column in the word list above. Sentences may be serious or silly.
4. Encourage groups of three students to collaborate to write poems using as many words as possible from the word list. Poems may be couplets, limericks, free verse, haiku, or any other form you or they select.

NEW! Compound Word Search - Students will put picture pairs together to form twenty compound words. For instance, a COW plus a BELL equals COWBELL. Some of the words aren't quite so obvious. Once students have formed all twenty compounds, they will need to locate each word in the word search puzzle diagram. Double the puzzles, double the learning, double the fun!
Word search worksheets can provide an easy way for students to do some extra spelling practice. Why? For some reason, kids (and adults, too!) always seem to enjoy find a word puzzles printable. Maybe it's because solving the puzzle is so much fun that it doesn't seem like real work! Here's a more difficult page with more silent-letter words. Students must supply the missing letters in the word list, then find the word in the puzzle.
